Mountain List

Intermediate Mountains

240 peaks

Mountains for hikers who already have some experiencelonger day-trips, single-night hut traverses, and the main summits of Yatsugatake, Tanzawa, Oku-Chichibu and the Jōshin'etsu range.

Map reading, weather judgement and basic alpine gear are assumed. Many routes involve over 1,000 m of elevation gain and around 8 hours of moving time. This is the heartland of a typical Hyakumeizan project, and the right step up for hikers moving from day-trips toward serious traverses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about this list.

Q. What counts as "intermediate" in Japanese hiking?
A.Intermediate mountains in this context usually mean 8-hour days with around 1,000 m or more of cumulative elevation gain, sometimes including a single hut night. You're past beginner trails but not yet into chained ridges and exposed rock — Yatsugatake's main summits, Tanzawa traverses, the Oku-Chichibu range and the Jōshin'etsu peaks are typical examples.
Q. What gear is required at this level?
A.Sturdy hiking boots, a properly fitted 25–35 L pack, layered clothing including hard-shell rain gear, headlamp, map and compass (or a reliable mapping app with offline support), emergency thermal layer, sufficient water and food, and a phone with battery backup. Trekking poles are widely used and worth carrying.
Q. How long do intermediate hikes typically take?
A.Most intermediate routes in this list run 6–10 hours of moving time and either fit a long single day or split into a 1-night hut climb. Times go up significantly outside summer because of wet rock, residual snow and shorter daylight.
Q. Can I climb the 100 Famous Mountains as an intermediate?
A.Yes — many Hyakumeizan peaks sit firmly in intermediate territory. A typical Hyakumeizan project covers a wide range of difficulty, but the middle of the list is exactly where most intermediate hikers spend their time before reaching for the harder peaks (Tsurugi, Hotaka, Yari and the long Southern Alps traverses).
Q. When is the best season?
A.Late June through mid-October for the Alps and other high mountains, with peak conditions in July through September. Lower intermediate peaks (Tanzawa, parts of Oku-Chichibu) extend into early November before snow becomes a factor. Always check whether mountain huts on your route are still open before committing.
